Administration

Practice Manager - Wendy Shaw

Wendy Shaw will be pleased to answer any query you may have about the administration of the surgery or any other aspect of your health care. Should you have any comments, criticisms or complaints concerning the surgery, she will be pleased to talk to you. We are continually looking at ways of improving our service to our patients and welcome any suggestions patients may wish to make.

Receptionists

Our receptionists are trained to do a difficult job well. Please remember that if you are kept waiting or seem to be asked one or two questions, they are carrying out surgery policy, which is aimed at making the practice run smoothly. They do have to judge the urgency of requests so please try to give the information they require. They should deal with all patients in a polite, respectful and courteous manner and we expect our patients to treat our staff in the same way. All staff are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the doctors and nurses.

Secretary

Our secretary Janet Bradshaw is available from 9.00 am until 2.00 pm. Monday to Friday. She arranges referrals to hospitals and private clinics for our patients and provides a very important link between the surgery and Consultants. She is also responsible for organising medical examinations and insurance requests for our patients as well as assisting with the booking of in house services. Should you have a test result, which is abnormal, the secretary will contact you to make arrangements for you to see your doctor.

Administrative Support

Our administrative support team consists of an Audit Clerk, Data Entry assistant and Notes summariser. Between them they work closely with the Practice Manager and are responsible for entering patient information on to the computer-. This includes entering patient registration details, immunisations, summarised medical information, scanning incoming correspondence, test results etc., producing reports and carrying out analysis as required. We are now linked with Leicestershire Strategic Health Authority (formerly Leicestershire Health), which has improved our information channels considerably. We are covered by the Data Protection Act 1 998. Since September 2000 the Practice has worked as a paperless practice and all details of consultations are recorded directly on to the computer by our clinical staff avoiding the need for the Doctors to use patient folders.

Nursing

Practice Nurses

We have 4 practice nurses at our surgery - Sister L White, Sister E Bramwell, Sister H Chiles and Sister A Hedworth. They are responsible for a wide range of services within the practice including Chronic Disease Management, New Patient Registrations, Health Promotion Clinics, blood tests, cervical smears and giving injections including those required for travelling. They will always offer advice should you wish to discuss any problem with them and provide a valuable support service to our doctors. Our Practice Nurses also provide a chaperone service during examinations.

District Nurses

Our district nurses are registered nurses who have taken further training. They hold clinics at both Burbage and Wolvey surgeries and deal with advanced wound care management. They also play a major part in palliative care for our terminally ill patients and liaise closely with the Doctors at the surgery and the Macmillan nurses. They provide skilled domiciliary nursing care for patients living in tile community who are housebound or disabled. Their direct number is 01455 632112.

Health Visitors

Our health visitors, Theresa Reynolds and Kerry Wright are trained nurses with midwifery experience who have taken further training to obtain the Health Visiting Certificate. As advisors on childcare and family problems, they work in the community with the family doctors. They are notified of births, and they visit from the 14th day after birth. They maintain contact thereafter by further home visits and monitor all children up to the age of 5 years. All babies and Young children will receive appointments to attend for routine immunisation. These are done at Burbage surgery on a Thursday morning and are combined with Child Health Surveillence checks and mum's postnatal check. They also carry out developmental checks and hold an open Baby Clinic in the Pentecostal Church in Tilton Road on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday afternoon of each month. They attend Wolvey Surgery on the last Wednesday morning of each month. They mlay be contacted at the surgery by telephoning 01455 441063 (ansaphone on when they are out).

Community Midwife

The community midwife is Elizabeth Yates. She is based at Leicester Royal Infimary and works with our GP's to provide antenatal and postnatal care and advice to our pregnant ladies.

Phlebotomists

A phlebotomy service is available Monday to Friday mornings at Burbage and Tuesday and Wednesday mornings at Wolvey for patients requiring a blood test. We also have a community phlebotomist for patients who are unable to get to the surgery. Appointments for both may be made via the reception at the surgery.

Other Services

Chiropody

Chiropody patients living in all areas covered by the practice are now seen at Hinckley Hospital. New patients may register by completing a form at reception and placing it in the chiropody box on the counter. An appointment will be sent to you by post.

Counsellor

A counselling service is available at the practice. This service is provided to our practice on a weekly basis and is available to any patient who feels that that they may benefit from counselling. Since a doctor must make referral, please make an appointment to see your doctor to discuss this. Private counselling is available on request.

NHS Direct is a 24 hour telephone helpline. The helpline is staffed by nurses who can help reassure you and give you telephone advice and health information. Anyone can ring NHS Direct at any time for health advice.

If you feel that there is something wrong with you or someone you are called about, a NHS Direct nurse will be able to help you and:

- tell you whether the symptoms can be managed safely at home and advise you on what to do to treat yourself or the person you are worried about.

- advise you if you do need to seek further help from a medical professional and direct you to the right service. In an emergency the nurse can also transfer you directly to the ambulance service.

NHS Direct is staffed by experienced nurses who are especially trained to give advice over the phone. They will ask you a series of questions which will help them decide how serious your problem is.
