The practice is actively working towards improving access in line with government targets. The practice is now able to offer a same day appointment with a GP. Patients are advised to telephone the surgery at 8.00 am to request an appointment for the same day. You will be offered either a telephone appointment or a face-to-face consultation. Receptionists will endeavour to give you an appointment with the Doctor of your choice. However, when that Doctor is away from the practice, an alternative will be offered. Information leaflets are available from the surgery on these changes. Patients may find that further changes are made from time to time as a way of improving access to our clinical staff.

To obtain an appointment at Burbage Surgery, please telephone 0844 477 1883 and make your request to the receptionist. To obtain a routine appointment at Wolvey, please telephone 0844 477 1889. It is also possible to check appointment availability and to book an appointment on line once you have registered for on line access with the practice.

NHS Direct is a 24 hour telephone helpline. The helpline is staffed by nurses who can help reassure you and give you telephone advice and health information. Anyone can ring NHS Direct at any time for health advice.

If you feel that there is something wrong with you or someone you are called about, a NHS Direct nurse will be able to help you and:

- tell you whether the symptoms can be managed safely at home and advise you on what to do to treat yourself or the person you are worried about.

- advise you if you do need to seek further help from a medical professional and direct you to the right service. In an emergency the nurse can also transfer you directly to the ambulance service.

NHS Direct is staffed by experienced nurses who are especially trained to give advice over the phone. They will ask you a series of questions which will help them decide how serious your problem is.
